Therapeutic Groups

Therapeutic Group Approach

Our goal at Aris Clinic is to reliably target valid, evidenced-based change processes that enhance adaptive human functioning. We accomplish this through our targeting of the six core processes of acceptance and commitment therapy. The core processes central to heathy functioning include:

  • Present Moment: This process involves developing the ability to be fully engaged in the current moment, rather than being caught up in thoughts about the past or worries about the future. It encourages mindfulness and awareness of the here and now.
  • Acceptance/Willingness: Cultivating the willingness to acknowledge and experience discomfort, whether it’s emotional feelings or bodily sensations, without trying to avoid or suppress them. This process emphasizes a non-judgmental stance towards these experiences.
  • Cognitive Diffusion: Cognitive diffusion involves observing and becoming aware of one’s thoughts without automatically believing or reacting to them. It’s about learning how to lean into what our mind is telling us when the message is helpful and taking a step back when it’s not.
  • Self As Context: This process focuses on shifting between different perspectives of oneself, rather than rigidly holding onto a single self-concept. It encourages a more holistic and flexible understanding of oneself and one’s relationship with the surrounding social environment.
  • Values: Identifying and clarifying one’s core values, which are guiding principles that help direct behavior and decision-making. Living in alignment with one’s values contributes to a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
  • Committed Action: Taking purposeful and value-based actions despite the presence of uncomfortable feelings or thoughts. This process involves moving towards one’s chosen direction in life, rather than being driven by attempts to avoid distress.

By focusing on these core processes, we’re aiming to help individuals lead more fulfilling and meaningful lives, in line with the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The distinction between validity and reliability, ensures that our therapeutic approach is both grounded in accurate scientific understanding and consistently applied to achieve positive outcomes.
